Towson's M.S. in Forensic Science is an interdisciplinary graduate program combining chemistry, biology and math to provide
students with advanced scientific and laboratory training. The program emphasizes a molecular biology-based approach with a focus
on DNA analysis. It is a professional science master's program designed for students seeking to pursue advanced training and to
excel in science in preparation for a forensic science career. Graduates are prepared for positions as working forensic scientists
in business, industry and government.
The program was designed to meet the standards established by the Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Committee
of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
Learning That Works
The program provides students with a comprehensive and in-depth study of the major areas of forensic science, including crime scene investigation and physical evidence analysis. Students learn to apply their knowledge of analytical chemistry, molecular biology, population genetics, forensic biology and DNA technologies to the laboratory, gaining advanced skills in instrumental methods, microscopy and materials analysis. Students also study quality assurance as well as the ethical and legal issues related to the profession.
The talented faculty includes professors with expertise in chemistry, biological sciences and mathematics. The 37-credit program is rich with laboratory experiences, and is capped by either a thesis or an internship and optional research project.< /p>
A Flexible Approach
Designed for the working professional as well as the full-time student, the program offers a wide variety of late afternoon, evening and summer classes. Part-time students can complete course work at their own pace. The program also offers unique learning opportunities beyond the traditional classroom experience, including seminars, internships, research projects and a master's thesis.
