Course Descriptions

Applying Research in the Teaching of Physical Education (3)*

Reading and interpreting current research in teaching physical education.  Understanding the impact of research on the teaching profession.

Technology and Computer Applications in Kinesiology (3)*

How technology impacts teaching and assessment.  Using technology to enhance the teaching and learning environment, and the delivery of instruction and assessment processes.

Analysis of Movement in Sport and Physical Activity (3)

Analyzing movement skills and processes to improve teaching of motor skills, and to diagnose movement problems for skilled and less skilled learners of all ages.

Psycho-Social and Cultural Determinants of Physical Activity Behaviors (3)

Focus will be upon the determinants of motivation in physical education and lifelong physical activity.  Will examine psychological, social and cultural barriers that contribute to sedentary lifestyles and physical activity dropout.

Concepts in Nutrition, Exercise and Lifelong Physical Activity for PK-12 Learners (3) 

The interaction between physical activity, exercise, and nutrition will be examined.  The focus will be to provide teachers with the tools to prescribe appropriate activity programs, and to recommend balanced nutritional programs.

Assessment in Physical Activity and Education (3)

The assessment of health-related fitness, physical activity, and learning of students in the psychomotor, cognitive and affective learning domains, using state of the art strategies and technology, and for the purpose of informing instruction.

Curriculum & Program Development in Physical Education (3)

Teacher candidates will critically examine current trends and issues to the sequencing and selection of programs and curricula to develop quality physical education programs.

Adapting Physical Education for All Learners (3)

With a focus on teaching in a diverse and inclusive classroom, this course will examine strategies to adapt teaching to meet the unique needs of learners with special needs.

Improving Teaching Effectiveness in Physical Education (3)

The focus will be on self-assessment of teaching, selecting authentic assessment strategies to determine the effectiveness of instruction, and reviewing research leading to best practice in physical activity instruction.

Internship & Capstone Folio in P.E. (3)** 

Candidates will apply knowledge and practice learned throughout the program with PK-12 learners.  A focus will be on teacher reflection upon the impact of their instruction, the assessment of student learning, and on the collection of action research and data to inform the teaching process.  Evidence based practice with artifacts being used to inform the Towson University program of the curricular effectiveness, as well as to assess candidate performance.
