Nursing Degree Master's Program

Degree Requirements

The master program in Nursing requires successful completion of a minimum of 36 units. Fifteen of these units will be determined by the concentration the student selects.

    Ethical and Legal Issues in Clinical Practice (3)
    Theoretical Foundations of Nursing Practice (3)

    Advanced Community-Based Nursing Practice (3-6)
    Nursing Master Thesis (6) (Optional)
    Elective course from a department outside of nursing (3)
Concentration A: Advanced Clinician (12 credits + 3 additional credits of NURS 800)
Students with special interests or needs can plan a unique master program with their adviser and approval of the program director. Students will select three electives from courses available in nursing or in other departments. In addition, students will be required to take the following courses:

    Clinical Practicum in Community-based Nursing (3)
    Seminar in Community-based Nursing (3)

NOTE: Earn a Graduate Certificate in Fam- ily-Professional Collaboration with your elec- tive units and some additional course work. Turn to page 92 for more information.

Concentration B: Nursing Education (15 units)
Students who desire to teach in a nursing school or work in staff development and education in a health care agency will complete the following courses. These courses constitute the requirements for a Certificate in Nursing Education (15 units). The certificate option may be selected alone, or serve as a component of the master program.

Concentration C: Clinician-Administrator Transition (CAT) (15 units)
Students desiring to emphasize administration can complete the CAT certificate program, including the following courses:

    Transitions: Health Professionals in a Changing Environment (3)
    Managing Health Care Professionals(3)
    Administration of Health Care Organizations(3)
    Health Care Financial Management(3)
    Planning and Marketing Health in Business and Industry (3)

This is also an interdisciplinary graduate certificate program offered by the College of Health Professions.

Optional Thesis (3-6 units)

Note: The 800 level courses are capstone courses, thus students in each concentration have a capstone experience.
